A recent image showed on Minekura’s blog regarding the Burial OVA, presents Sanzo ikkou and, on the top, the image of the full Moon. In the two sides of it there are Ukoku and Koumyou Sanzo.

As we know Koumyou was assimilated to the Moonlight while Ukoku to the Darkness. So, if we take the Moon as point of reference, the Light and the Darkness are two parts of it.

In a past discussion I had analyzed one among the Moon’s peculiarity: we can see the same face always, the one that reflects the Sunlight. While, the other face, reminds darkened always. The Ukoku’s Darkness is connected to the night so the absence of Light reflected by the Moon. Could be not a case that in this image we can see only the faces of Ukoku and Koumyou Sanzo. Maybe they represent the opposite faces of the Moon. Another important detail is the hair colour of the two Sanzo. Ukoku has dark hair that could represent the Darkened face of the Moon (the hair and eyes colour of Ukoku are one of the peculiarities that struck Koryu when he met the monk the first time). Koumyou has light hair that could represent the Lightened face of the Moon (When Koryu was found by Koumyou remembers to have seen the Light).

There are many other images in which we can see the same details.

Also in this image between Koumyou and Ukoku appears the Moon.

Another similar image is that one dedicated to Burial and that, before, was the link to enter in the Minekura’s website. In this image are showed all main characters that appear in Burial. In the background there is the Moon too. Also in this image Ukoku and Koumyou are placed in the two sides of the Moon and we can see only their FACES. The Ukoku’s side of the Moon is Darkened while the Koumyou’s one is Lightened.

We can analyze the image of Saiyuubito. The coloured pages of Saiyuubito show the main characters of Saiyuki. Everyone is showed individually but Koumyou and Ukoku are showed in the same image. Their clothes are the same. The main difference is the opposite hair colour. Also the position in which are placed could represent the two Moon’s faces.

This image reminds us the Yin and Yang symbol. The long Koumyou’s plait and the Ukoku’s hair and tie seems represent the symbol. The Moon itself could represent that symbol. The words Yin and Yang are formed by Chinese ideograms “Moon” and “Sun”.

Now we can speak also about the Sun that, as we know, is represented by Genjo Sanzo. Maten and Seiten kyoumon control Yin (Maten) and Yang (Seiten). The words connects to Yin and Yang are not only Sun and Moon but also: Darkness and Light (like Ukoku and Koumyou); West and East that could remind Saiyuki.
